چکیده
Abstract We studied and found that the populations of two gastropod species in inter-tidal zone Red Sea at Eilat demonstrate a predominantly dextral chirality their shells. identified lateralization sinistral/dextral shell torsion for 675 live Tenguella granulata (left = 114, 16.9%; right 561, 83.1%) 405 Clanculus pharaonius 102, 25.2%; 303, 74.8%). In both cases, we differences between sinistral torsions . The ecological evolutionary consequences individuals with are unclear, but there indications it is directional rather than stochastic process.

Identification of Shell Colour Pigments in Marine Snails Clanculus pharaonius and C. margaritarius (Trochoidea; Gastropoda)
Colour and pattern are key traits with important roles in camouflage, warning and attraction. Ideally, in order to begin to understand the evolution and ecology of colour in nature, it is important to identify and, where possible, fully characterise pigments using biochemical methods. The phylum Mollusca includes some of the most beautiful exemplars of biological pigmentation, with the vivid co...
متن کاملFurther twists in gastropod shell evolution.
The manner in which a gastropod shell coils has long intrigued laypersons and scientists alike. In evolutionary biology, gastropod shells are among the best-studied palaeontological and neontological objects. A gastropod shell generally exhibits logarithmic spiral growth, right-handedness and coils tightly around a single axis. Atypical shell-coiling patterns (e.g. sinistroid growth, uncoiled w...
متن کاملA Method for Quantifying, Visualising, and Analysing Gastropod Shell Form
Quantitative analysis of organismal form is an important component for almost every branch of biology. Although generally considered an easily-measurable structure, the quantification of gastropod shell form is still a challenge because many shells lack homologous structures and have a spiral form that is difficult to capture with linear measurements. In view of this, we adopt the idea of theor...

The shell-breaking behavior of the crabs 0:iu.y verrec~uxri Saussure 1853 and Eriphia .squtmwta. Stimpson 1859 from the Bay of Panama is described. The master claws of both these crabs are well designed for breaking shells. Small shells, relative to the size of a crab predator, are crushed by progressively breaking off larger segments of a shell’s apex, while larger shells are peeled by inserti...
متن کاملColorful seashells: Identification of haem pathway genes associated with the synthesis of porphyrin shell color in marine snails
Very little is known about the evolution of molluskan shell pigments, although Mollusca is a highly diverse, species rich, and ecologically important group of animals comprised of many brightly colored taxa. The marine snail genus Clanculus was chosen as an exceptional model for studying the evolution of shell color, first, because in Clanculus margaritarius and Clanculus pharaonius both shell ...
